Since September 2015, MAD Brussels has worked in collaboration with three Brussels institutions, to establish pilot projects that integrate eco-design and sustainable design into their curriculum through specific projects. This way, students discover the wider concepts of circular economy through tangible situations.
Académie des Beaux-Arts (ARBA)
Coordination between the urban design department and architecture department of a week long workshop in January 2016 on the eco-conception of a seating area in public space.
In January 2016, the different departments and years were mixed for the length of a week-long workshop dedicated to sustainable design of a seating in a public space. One team stood out for its motivation, its sense of detail, and continued to develop their project at MAD in Situ during their summer holidays. The project is still in progress: you will be kept up to date of the moment the prototype is implanted!

École centrale des arts et métiers (ECAM)
Coordination with the industrial engineering institute on the “Integrating project” for first year students during which 47 groups of 6 students had to conceive and construct a prototype of a vending machine.
In collaboration with the eco-conception cell from the UCM, the students were made aware of environmental issues and were encouraged to take a critical perspective on their project through the design methodology by using tools to analyse the environmental impact.

Haute école Francisco Ferrer (HEFF)
Coordination by MAD / Eco-design of a global project with the textile department regarding natural dying techniques.
The textile department at Francisco Ferrer have worked with the Eco-Design Cell since October 2015 on the realisation of a global project on natural textile dyeing techniques. A collaboration with the horticulture department of the Institut Redouté-Peiffer was introduced. Together, students from both schools set up a space to plant pigmented flowers and put in place a process of vegetal waste recovery.
They then experienced the techniques of extraction, application and maintenance of those dyes.
Since then, professional textile creators and designers joined the adventure. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you wish to do the same!

EHE KIT
Kit EES is a tool developed by OVAM (Flemish agency for resource and waste management) with the aim to promote and guide the integration of sustainable design to higher education. OVAM offered their rich and wise expertise to a group co-ordinated by the Sustainable Design Committee at the UCM and MAD Brussels, as part of the Employment-Environment Alliance, at the source of the three pilot projects described on this site.
This tool has also been translated into French and made available on the UCM website:
ECOLIZER
Ecolizer 2.0 is a sustainable design tool also developed by OVAM and offered in French by UCM. It is aimed at designers, engineers and businesses wishing to carry out an initial comparative evaluation of the impact their product has according to its materials.

Flanders Fashion Institute and Plan C have developed this tool and its web platform to help entrepreneurs and enterprises specifically in the fashion sector in order to lean towards an enviromentally friendly model through circular economy.
